José Arias, New Works

Good Design is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by José Arias. The exhibition will run from Tuesday, June 07 through Friday, July 01, 2011.

Opening reception for the artist will be held Tuesday, June 7, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

José Arias (b. 1964) is a Dominican artist who lives and works in New York and uses clay as his primary medium of expression.

Arias' work explores bodies both animal and human to introduce the viewer to new ideas and concepts about their own perceptions of the real and imagined world. His creation of an ideal world sans pain, horror or hate is reminiscent of that of Edward Hicks' Peacable Kingdom. Much like Hicks' painted views, Arias' clay figures are portrayed benignly interacting. His work is influenced by surrealism, islamic art and the interpretation of his dreams. In his most recent body of work Arias experiments with geometric patterns and small figures.

José Arias began his ceramics studies with Sana Musasama at Hunter College in 2007. He has attended workshops with Matt Nolen at Greenwich House Pottery and New York University.

His work has been exhibited at the Thomas Hunter Project Room at Hunter College and at Modernism+Art20 at the Park Avenue Armory.

Image and Abstraction: American Color Prints of the 1950's, runs from November 1st to December 23rd 2011. The show, which opens during New York's Print Week, includes examples by Lee Chesney, William Littlefield, Seong Moy and other artists.

Alan Rosenberg, the curator of the exhibition said that it is the result of "more than a decade of research and discovery."
